Behavioural mapping of a pelagic seabird: combining multiple sensors and a hidden Markov model reveals the distribution of at-sea behaviour

first_imgThe use of miniature data loggers is rapidly increasing our understanding of the movements and habitat preferences of pelagic seabirds. However, objectively interpreting behavioural information from the large volumes of highly detailed data collected by such devices can be challenging. We combined three biologging technologies—global positioning system (GPS), saltwater immersion and time–depth recorders—to build a detailed picture of the at-sea behaviour of the Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) during the breeding season. We used a hidden Markov model to explore discrete states within the combined GPS and immersion data, and found that behaviour could be organized into three principal activities representing (i) sustained direct flight, (ii) sitting on the sea surface, and (iii) foraging, comprising tortuous flight interspersed with periods of immersion. The additional logger data verified that the foraging activity corresponded well to the occurrence of diving. Applying this approach to a large tracking dataset revealed that birds from two different colonies foraged in local waters that were exclusive, but overlapped in one key area: the Irish Sea Front (ISF). We show that the allocation of time to each activity differed between colonies, with birds breeding furthest from the ISF spending the greatest proportion of time engaged in direct flight and the smallest proportion of time engaged in foraging activity. This type of analysis has considerable potential for application in future biologging studies and in other taxa.last_img read more

NTT vows to abolish bride ‘kidnapping’ after nationwide public anger

first_imgThe administration of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has vowed to abolish the practice of kawin tangkap (capture and wed), a form of bride kidnapping commonly practiced on the island of Sumba, after a viral video of an such an event angered a Cabinet minister and the public nationwide. The administration claimed that the practice violated humanitarian values, the state ideology of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.”The NTT administration supports the eradication of customary laws that violate human rights. […] We urge religious leaders, tribal leaders and regional administrations to stop any customary practice that shackles humanity,” the head of NTT’s Women Empowerment and Child Protection Agency, Erny Usboko, told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.Erny said any regulation or culture that infringed human dignity should be changed.”Of course, it is not as easy as turning one’s hand and [the practice] could not be stopped immediately. It will take a gradual and slow process by educating local indigenous communities,” she said. She said Sumba local administrations, religious leaders and tribal leaders could hold a discussion about equality, dignity, justice, universality and humanity.Read also: Video of ‘kidnap and wed’ practice on Sumba Island angers minister”NTT Governor Viktor Laiskodat has held a meeting with regents from Sumba Island asking them to stop any customary law that contradicts humanitarian values and justice. We don’t want customary laws to violate human rights,” Erny said. The practice of kawin tangkap has been in the spotlight lately after a video showing locals take a woman by a public place went viral in social media. In the video, a group of men is seen carrying a distressed-looking woman to a black pickup. Another woman comes and hugs the woman through the open window while trying to open the car door to get her out of the vehicle.Dozens of people can be seen crowding the car, cheering and taking videos, while the woman cries as the event unfolds. The head of the East Nusa Tenggara Legislative Council (DPRD), Emilia Nomleni, said the practice should be stopped at all costs.”In my opinion, kawin tangkap needs to be stopped by all means, as it violates the law and is a form of harassment not only for women but also children. We’ll never know whether the women ‘kidnapped’ from public spaces or their boarding houses are underage or not,” she told the Post on Wednesday. An offficial from the East Sumba Tourism and Culture Agency, Yudi Umbu TT Rawambaku, admitted that the practice did not regard age when the perpetrators take a woman by force.”There is no age limit; if a girl has gone through puberty and is considered an adult, there’s no restriction [for ‘kidnapping’ her],” Yudi said last Wednesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.Emilia said members of the NTT legislative council had discussed ways to end the practice before the COVID-19 pandemic.”We had discussed ways to end the practice, but the discussions stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All parties, from regional administrations, councillors and religious leaders to other stakeholders should take part to end the practice of kawin tangkap,” she said.Topics :last_img read more

His British actress girlfriend, Jodie, covets the role but realises she must travel to South Africa to fully embrace the character. On arrival she meets ruggedly handsome Kobus, a young farmer who shares the same last name as the historical character, and eventually convinces him to let her stay at the farm. Fadnavis, Uddhav tour rain-hit areas in Maharashtra amid impasse over govt.

first_imgEven as government formation in Maharashtra is in a limbo, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray are touring parts of the State which suffered crop damage due to unseasonal rains last month. Also read: Villager ‘nominates’ himself for Maharashtra CM jobMr. Fadnavis is in Akola on Sunday to meet farmers and review the crop damage caused in the district due to untimely rains, an official in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.Mr. Thackeray is touring Aurangabad district on Sunday where he will take stock of the crop losses in Kannad and Vaijapur talukas, a statement by the Sena said. The State government on Saturday approved ₹10,000 crore as a special provision to provide immediate assistance to farmers affected by unseasonal rains. Crops like jowar, paddy, cotton, maize, tur and soyabean on 54.22 lakh hectares spread across 325 talukas in some districts have been damaged, Mr. Fadnavis said after a review meeting on Friday. During a Cabinet sub-committee meeting on Saturday, Mr. Fadnavis directed the officials concerned to review the ground situation in their respective areas and finalise details of the assistance to be provided. The State witnessed unprecedented post monsoon showers this year, especially due to cyclones in the Arabian Sea. Most of the crop damage due to untimely showers was caused in the second and third weeks of October. State Transport Minister Diwakar Raote on Saturday visited farmlands affected by heavy rains in Akola to assess crop damage. The opposition Congress earlier dubbed the provision of ₹10,000 crore for farmers as a “mere eyewash”, while NCP leader Ajit Pawar said it was “inadequate” and that the BJP and Shiv Sena should come together and form government to provide relief to farmers hit by untimely rains. The BJP and its ally Shiv Sena are currently at loggerheads over sharing of power in the new government. There was also speculation that the Shiv Sena may join hands with the NCP and form government with outside support from the Congress. Some State Congress leaders have said the party should back the Sena to keep the BJP out of power. In the last month’s polls to 288-member State Assembly, the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena-56, NCP-54 and Congress-44.last_img read more

Leicester goal machine Jamie Vardy splutters to a halt

first_imgTwelve months after Jamie Vardy earned worldwide fame for scoring in a record 11th Premier League match in succession, he is suffering a barren spell that mirrors Leicester City’s fall from domestic grace. The 29-year-old forward, who was signed from minor league Fleetwood Town in 2012 and helped catapult Leicester to a shock Premier League title triumph last season, has gone 15 club games without a goal and may be dropped for Saturday’s relegation tussle at Sunderland.Hollywood film makers planning a movie based on Vardy’s life may have to start thinking about rewriting their rags to riches story, to rags to riches and back again. It is hard to pinpoint the precise reason for Vardy and Leicester’s domestic slide especially as the team have made a spectacular start to their maiden Champions League campaign, securing a place in the knockout phase with a game to spare.Full back Danny Simpson said Premier League opponents were playing deeper against the champions this season, not allowing the sort of balls over the defence that Vardy can exploit with his pace. One thing is for certain, Leicester are missing former midfield talisman N’Golo Kante. The 25-year-old France international is once again at the top of the Premier League table, this time with new club Chelsea.Kante’s tackles and interceptions have been instrumental in Chelsea’s run of seven straight wins and he forms a strong partnership with Nemanja Matic in front of the defence.Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri has so far stood by the misfiring Vardy, his only striker to start every Champions League game and an almost ever-present in the Premier League despite netting twice in 958 minutes this season.advertisementBut another disappointing display last week, in a fortuitous 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough that has left them two points above the relegation zone, threatens the England international’s place, with new boy Islam Slimani the likely replacement.Vardy was demoted to the bench earlier this season against Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion but Ranieri suggested that was part of a rotation policy designed around their Champions League involvement.HIT-AND-HOPEWith qualification for the last 16 now assured, Ranieri may believe it is time to act with the statistics showing his striker is producing 1.2 shots on target per game compared to 3.2 last season.Former England forward Michael Owen sparked a debate about Vardy earlier in the season by saying on BT Sport that he was a hit-and-hope striker.”He’s the type of centre forward or type of finisher that is very much head down and hit it. He goes for power a lot. He’s not necessarily a real cute, classy type of finisher,” said Owen who also acknowledged the value of Vardy’s running.Leicester defender Simpson counters by saying a total of 24 Premier League goals last season tells its own story.”I am backing him 100 percent,” he said of Vardy. “You should see him in training, he smashes them in all over the place.”It is just one of those things, when he gets one he will go and score a load more.”It may be unfair to single out Vardy for criticism when Leicester are collectively underachieving in the Premier League while saving their best for Europe. After 13 games Ranieri’s side are down in 14th spot. At the same stage last year they were top, with 12 more goals, five more wins and 15 more points.Fingers are also being pointed at Algeria playmaker Riyad Mahrez.Mahrez was voted the 2015-16 Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year but he now finds himself heavily marked and confined to deeper positions as negative tactics choke off his supply line to Vardy. The few Leicester supporters who backed their team at 5,000-1 to land the Premier League crown last season might like to consider another bet: 500-1 to win the Champions League and be relegated.last_img read more
